How to pick a good addiction facility for a loved one?

 

Addiction treatment programs are vast across the internet. When searching for a good addiction treatment program sometimes consumers can get overwhelmed. Sober Sky has great pointers to help you in picking out the best addiction treatment programs.

 

• Pick a program that has an experienced staff treating your loved one. It is important to find out how long the staff has been treating addictions. The longer a program has been in business treating addictions is always a good start.
• Will the program that you send your loved one be exposed to 12- step approaches? Pick a program that introduces and individual to the 12- step programs. More people get sober and stay sober because of the 12-steps. All other promises or modalities are simply not proven and you should be cautious of any other claims.
• The staff is the most important aspect of any good treatment program. In other words the people that treat your loved one need to know what they are doing. Once again experience is the best indicator of a great addiction treatment program.
• Medical detox and counselors on staff are very important. A program that does not have licensed staff needs to be scrutinized. Some programs do exist that do not have licensed staff, but they are usually recovery centers and will not be using counseling. I recommend facilities of this nature under the section recovery centers. They are a totally different type of program. They are not treatment programs. Summer Sky Treatment Center attended the 2010 Spectrum Conference hosted by the Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals. This years conference was The Thirty Seventh Annual Conference on Addiction Studies. Interventions and Treatment!

Intervention- this is a very strategic approach to getting an individual to enter a treatment program. I think everyone needs to spend some time and analyze exactly what a treatment center is suppose to be offering an individual? I know it can be confusing trying to match a person to the right addiction program. One of the first things to consider is what exactly is addiction? addiction, drug or alcohol Repeated use of a psychoactive substance or substances, to the extent that the user (referred to as an addict) is periodically or chronically intoxicated, shows a compulsion to take the preferred substance (or substances), has great difficulty in voluntarily ceasing or modifying substance use, and exhibits determination to obtain psychoactive substances by almost any means. Typically, tolerance is prominent and a withdrawal syndrome frequently occurs when substance use is interrupted. The life of the addict may be dominated by substance use to the virtual exclusion of all other activities and responsibilities. The term addiction also conveys the sense that such substance use has a detrimental effect on society, as well as on the individual; when applied to the use of alcohol, it is equivalent to alcoholism. Addiction is a term of long-standing and variable usage. It is regarded by many as a discrete disease entity, a debilitating disorder rooted in the pharmacological effects of the drug, which is remorselessly progressive. From the 1920s to the 1960s attempts were made to differentiate between addiction ; and "habituation", a less severe form of psychological adaptation. In the 1960s the World Health Organization recommended that both terms be abandoned in favor of dependence, which can exist in various degrees of severity. Addiction is not a diagnostic term in ICD-10, but continues to be very widely employed by professionals and the general public alike. See also: dependence; dependence syndrome.

Questions to Ask Treatment Programs

Drug addiction has many different dangerous consequences. One thing that consumers want to think about when looking for a drug treatment program is can the facility handle you or your loved ones medical condition along with the addiction. When you look for a facility, one question to ask the treatment program, is do you have a medical component in your program? What are some of the types of medical staff that are present at the treatment program? Is the medical staff present 24 hours per day?

Not all drug treatment programs have a full time medical staff. This does not mean that if a program does not have a medical staff that the program is not a good program. It simply means that the level of care that they provide is different than a medical based treatment program. The medical based treatment program can provide treatment for a higher risk population than a non-medical residential treatment program.

Some IV drug users can have abscesses and ulcerations caused by soft tissue infections. Having access to a medical staff for this individual helps in the process of healing and treatment. Another important consideration to ask a drug or alcohol treatment program is do they have the ability to provide detoxification on site or do you need to seek detox at an alternative site before entering into the treatment program? Some addictive chemicals are dangerous to withdrawal from and medical attention is required to safely remove the chemicals from the body.
